My Favorite Travel Items for Staying Organized on the Go

Mar 29, 2018 | Travel Planning

Are you guilty of holding up the line at a security checkpoint because you have so much stuff in your pockets? Have you ever lost your wallet or phone while traveling because it fell out of your bag? Does packing for a trip consist of throwing a bunch of stuff in a suitcase and hoping you have what you need?

Traveling requires carrying a lot of stuff – even if you’re a light packer, so it’s important to be as organized as possible! The following items are some of my favorite travel items that can help you stay organized and efficient – whether you’re traveling a couple hours or across the globe.

ScotteVest Jackets: I absolutely love my ScotteVest jacket! With sleeves that can be removed and pockets for everything you can imagine, this jacket/vest combo doubles as a medium-sized purse that I can wear which makes traveling only with carry-ons an easier task. The pockets are large enough to hold books, tablets, and bottles of water plus all of the smaller items you want to keep secure, such as your phone, I.D., boarding pass, and wallet. For the summer months, you can unzip the sleeves and wear it as a travel vest. My two favorite ScotteVest styles are the trench coat and jacket/vest combo.

Vera Bradley RFID All-In-One Crossbody Vera Wallet: I love having my phone, credit cards, cash, a small notebook, tissues, and a pen easily contained in one efficient wallet that can be dropped in a larger bag, placed in my jacket pocket, or worn as a small purse. I use a Vera Bradley crossbody wallet even when I’m not traveling because it’s so versatile and handy. Plus, I can clip my keys to the strap so I don’t lose them.

Timbuk2 Wingman Duffel (Medium Size): This bag has been my travel companion since I was introduced to it several years ago. The bag’s design, construction materials, capacity, and ability to be used as a duffel or a backpack make it a travel staple. It even fits in the overhead bins of small regional jet airplanes, and I can pack as much in it as a standard carryon. Plus, wearing this bag on the plane as a backpack often means I can board with my bags instead of being forced to check them. That’s a huge time and hassle saver!

Samsonite 15.6” Classic Business Wheeled Business Case: I always need at least one bag with wheels, especially when I’m traveling alone. This Samsonite laptop bag is the most durable and efficient option I’ve come across. I can pack my computer, files, presentation materials, and other travel items easily in this bag. It easily fits under the seat in front of me on most airplanes. And with the inline skate wheels, it’s more durable that traditional roller bags.

Packing Cubes, Shoe Bags, and 3-1-1 Compliant Bag: These Amazon Basics packing cubes are perfect for containing complete outfits or specific clothing types for quick and easy access when you arrive at your destination. I never let my speaking outfit out of my reach. So, if I’m forced to check a bag for any reason, I can quickly grab my speaking clothes cube from my bag and keep it with me when I board. I also love my TSA-approved clear toiletry bag. It’s durable and packs in nicely with the other packing cubes in my bag.

Hanging Toiletry Bag – Flat Organizer: I was amazed at how much I could fit into this efficiently designed toiletry bag. It’s a perfect complement to my packing cubes and TSA 3-1-1 toiletry bag. It has a waterproof interior and several zipper pockets, including an expanding one. Plus, the handle makes it easy to pull out of your bag or to hang on a hook when you need it easily accessible.

Rume cFold Expandable Weekend Travel Gym Bag: I always seem to need a spare bag for getting around when I arrive at my destination. This one by Rume now goes everywhere I go. If you buy a few too many souvenirs or collect a little too much conference swag, it doubles as a carry-on item that will slide over your roller bag handle for the trip home.

Jewelry Travel Case: If you travel with jewelry, this high capacity, yet compact and beautifully organized travel case is a must. It also works well for technology cords and components you want to protect and contain while traveling.

Thirty-One Bags and Accessories: The other items keeping my bags organized when I’m traveling are the standard and mini zipper pouches, insulated thermal pouches, and Pocket-A-Tote clear plastic zip bag by Thirty-One Bags. They are the perfect tools for holding your portable office supplies, transporting prescriptions or food items that need to stay cold, and containing loose items that could get lost in your bag or fall out when you’re searching for other things.

Travelon Bag Bungee: With my Timbuk2 bag on top of my Samsonite wheeled bag, this travel bungee is a life saver! It’s strong, durable, and stores easily in an outside zipper pocket on either bag so it’s quickly accessible. Add your jacket to the top of the pile and keep everything secure with this travel necessity!

Starbuck’s Cold Cup 24 oz. Venti Tumbler: The last thing I need when I’m traveling is my favorite coffee drink spilled all over. So, the first thing I do when I get my travel beverage is transfer it to this durable tumbler. Then I can carry it in my arms without fear of squeezing it too tight, and I don’t have to worry about the lid popping off as I transfer my bags to the overhead bin. It’s also perfect for mixing my protein powder with my beverage for a quick meal on the go!
