passport for travelTravel planning is a part of the job for most administrative professionals today. So it’s important to stay up to date on the latest best practices and resources available for coordinating travel. But with a wealth of technology, tools, and online travel planning resources out there, it can be challenging to stay on top of it all. These strategies can help you keep your travel planning skills sharp and become a travel planning pro!

1. Regularly read travel websites, blogs, newsletters, and magazines. These publications often share the latest tools, tricks, and ideas for successfully planning travel. There are a lot of resources out there, though. So figure out which ones work best for the types of travel you coordinate and use them! Some of my favorites include:

  • Must Read Articles and Ebooks:

executive travel management guide      comprehensive business travel planning

2. Follow travel planning experts and service providers on social media. Social media is an excellent tool for keeping track of travel resources. Search Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn for the airlines, ground transportation companies, hotels, and other travel resources you regularly use. Then follow, like, or connect with them so you can stay up-to-date on the latest news, trends, and tips.

3. Attend travel events and conferences. There are numerous annual events and conferences that are hosted by travel or trade groups. Some of my recommendations include HSMAI’s Events and Meeting Professionals International. Some of these organizations also offer free or low-cost online training with industry experts – so keep a lookout for those opportunities and take advantage of them when they’re available.

4. Conduct online research. If you have a pressing travel question, trying checking to see what you can learn on your own online. There are numerous travel review sites that often have advice and tips from experienced travelers.

5. Use a travel agent. Most travel agents are subject matter experts on destinations around the world. And reputable agencies regularly invest in training their agents and sending them to various destinations so they can share firsthand experiences with you. Use their wealth of knowledge and expand yours at the same time!

6. Ask other travelers. Getting advice from other travelers is one of the best ways to become a better travel planner. Ask as many people as you can about their experiences, what they enjoyed, what they’d do again, and what to avoid.

7. Get out there and explore! One of the best ways to become a better travel planner is to travel yourself. It can give you a new appreciation for the details that go into the planning process. You’ll also better understand the stress associated with various types of travel, as well as the importance of preparing your executive for a trip.

Implementing these strategies for travel planning will not only keep your skills sharp but increase your value with those you support.
