This week, I was in Toronto, speaking at the APC Canada conference. During my session on developing a strategic administrative career plan, I reminded my audience that every single one of us is just a business decision away from having our professional lives turned upside down. It doesn’t matter if you’re self-employed or working in the best job you’ve ever had for the best boss in the world, none of us are exempt. What separates the resilient from the rest is a proactive approach to planning their careers.
To advance your administrative career, fulfill your goals, and achieve professional success, you need to map out your career path and organize yourself and your professional life accordingly. This means knowing where you wanted your career to take you in the first place, and mapping out your plan to make it happen. When things go awry, a plan helps you course correct more quickly.
Think of it like this. When you’re driving down the road and you come up on road construction or traffic grinds to a halt, you don’t drive your car in the ditch and leave it there. You begin searching for an alternate route. You look at a map or rely on your GPS to help you hit reset as quickly as possible. That’s what a strategic career plan will do for you, too.
This week, we’re explaining how to create your career plan and giving you tips on how to organize it. Our feature article talks specifically about how to organize your administrative career, and we’re sharing more tips on our Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn pages.
