This week, we’re celebrating a fun milestone at All Things Admin: the second birthday of The Innovative AdminTM!
It’s hard to believe that it’s already been two years since the book was published. And I’m so thrilled with the impact it has had on admins across the country and around the world! But writing it wasn’t easy!
Last week, at the WA-AK Division IAAP Conference, I talked about the innovation adoption curve and how sometimes it can be a long process with a lot of challenges to navigate. The Innovative AdminTM is a perfect example. While writing the book was an amazing and educational experience, I was so tired of the topic by the time I got it published that it took me months before I was actually excited to talk about and promote my book. But this was all part of the innovation process.
A lot of admins struggle with whether it’s worth their time and energy to be more innovative in their profession and career. Why go outside of your comfort zone when it often seems easier to maintain the status quo? When someone asks me this, or I’m faced with this dilemma myself, I ask just one question:
Is your idea worth doing even if it only helps one person? (And that one person might just be you!)
If the answer is “yes,” then you need to do it! Because if it can help one person — whether it’s another admin, your executive, or a colleague — it’s worth it!
When I wrote my book, I told myself that if it helped one admin, it would be a success. Two years later, the impact is much bigger than I ever imaged. The excitement from all of you about the book, and innovating and advancing your own careers, is energizing. And I’m so thankful and honored that the book has made such a positive impact on you and our profession.
All that said, I’ve decided it’s time to continue practicing what I preach and do some more innovating myself. So, I’m very excited to announce that I’m officially working on my next book!
The coolest part about starting this process again is I’m already applying what I learned going through the innovation adoption curve the last time. This roller-coaster ride isn’t nearly as intimidating. And I have surrounded myself with the most amazing support team. While I don’t have an exact release date yet, stay tuned. I’ll be sure to keep you updated in upcoming newsletters, as well as on our Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn pages.
