Last week, we talked about how to prioritize your admin tasks and responsibilities to keep yourself on track. But there’s another component to staying efficient and effective in your admin job: scheduling your time.
It’s easy to throw our hands up and declare we’re too busy to fit anything else into our jam packed days. Over the years, I’ve learned that “busy” is a choice just like productivity is a choice. And learning to schedule my time more wisely puts me more in control of what happens each day. I don’t do it perfectly, but the more I practice scheduling my time, the better I get at it, and the more productive I become. I can tell you the results are worth the effort!
One thing I had to do to gain a better awareness of time was to track my time each day for a week or two. It helped me identify the places where my time was being wasted, where disruptions were creating delays, which items took longer to complete than I was allowing time for, and when I was functioning at my peak vs. feeling tired and sluggish. If you want fine tune your ability to get things done and improve your productivity, start by tracking your time for a few days. It’s a very eye opening exercise that will help you pin point the areas you need to improve or fine tune.
