Personal Note from Julie: Communication Skills Are Foundational for a Successful Partnership

communicationfilesharingbye-mail250[1]Effective communication is important in any relationship, but it’s a requirement for admins and their executives. With so many mediums for communicating today, it’s more critical than ever before that you not only choose the right medium to deliver your message but that you pay attention to your tone and the communication styles of those you are communicating with. And I can’t stress enough the importance of being thorough and concise in your delivery.

We’re all being inundated with hundreds of emails and text messages daily. On top of that there are dozens of face to face contacts and voice messages from multiple phones. It’s even worse for our executives. That’s why you must develop an effective communication strategy for working with your executive if you want to strengthen your strategic partnership.

Your communication style can make or break you. If you ramble on in messages never getting to the point, you are wasting their time. If you don’t provide as much of the who, what, when, where, why, and how in the original conversation (in person or electronically), you don’t look prepared. If your executive prefers short and sweet, then you need to become the master of articulation. It’s important to learn as much as you can about your executive’s communication style and do what you can to tailor yours to theirs.

This week’s feature article shares some tips for communicating in the text/chat age. And we’ve provided some excellent links and resources on communicating more effectively on our Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn pages also. I hope you’ll invest a few minutes to refresh your skills in this key area.

If you want to lay the foundation for a successful partnership with your executive for years to come, do whatever you can to improve your communication skills. I promise you won’t regret it!

Supporting your administrative success,

Julie
