Note From Julie: Rest, Relax, Refresh, Repeat!

Jul 7, 2017 | Career Development, Productivity

Sydney, AustraliaIt’s July…already. And I don’t know about you, but I need a vacation. I travel a fair amount throughout the year for work. I love to travel, so it’s exciting and refreshing in one sense, but it’s also exhausting. And sometimes I think my mind confuses travel with vacation even when it’s for work. A true vacation is not anything like a work trip, though! (At least mine aren’t.)

So when the opportunity to take a real vacation to Sydney, Australia presented itself in advance of my trip to Auckland, New Zealand for Executive Secretary LIVE, July 14-15, I jumped at it! I’ve been to Sydney twice, but there is still more that I want to see and do. I also have several friends who live just south of Sydney who I haven’t seen in a few years, so I decided this was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up. And I’m so glad I made the decision to take some real time off to rest, relax, and refresh myself this week.

As an admin, it can be hard to take time for yourself with so many people relying on you. But taking time to rest, reset, and refresh is extremely important to your personal and professional well-being. You cannot take care of those you support as well as you need to when your own battery is dead. So our theme for the entire month of July is: Rest, Relax, Refresh, Repeat! The Admin’s Guide to a Summer of Revitalization. We’ll be giving you tips and advice on how to make this a revitalizing summer.

This week, our focus is on the importance of sleep and rest to your personal and professional life. Are you getting enough sleep? Do you know how much your body requires to function at its optimal abilities? It can be a challenge, but rest is essential to maintaining a healthy lifestyle and having the energy you need to perform at your peak – in and out of the office. It impacts everything from brain development to appetite and weight gain to your ability to think critically and manage your emotions.

Be sure to check out our feature article on the consequences and warning signs of sleep deprivation, and what to do about them. We’re also sharing some excellent resources on our Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn pages.

When you discover all the things sleep can cure – or significantly impact – it’s much easier to prioritize this key habit in your overall self-care strategy!

Supporting your administrative success,

Julie
