I began working with my first success coach after I started my business in 2005. I wasn’t familiar with coaching until I attended a training course led by this particular coach. I was so impressed with what I heard and learned from her in a half day of training, I was certain that working with her long term as my coach would yield positive results. I was right.
Since then, I’ve partnered with several other coaches as my career and business have evolved. I’ve worked with coaches who specialize in business growth, product development, organization, and productivity. Each has helped me improve key areas of my professional development.
In most cases, it’s not that I couldn’t figure some of these things out on my own. The reason I chose to engage with a coach was to help fast track my progress. I wanted the consistent accountability, the experience and expertise, and the personal guidance to help me work through the learning curve more efficiently. Investing time and money in a formal coaching relationship has been key to helping me consistently achieve my goals.
But not all coaches are the same, though. Each one has specialties and target audiences they serve best. So it’s important to do your homework, talk to others who have worked with them, and interview them before agreeing to a formal coaching engagement. This week, we are talking about how and when to use a career coach for your job search or career development needs. We’re sharing tips on our Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn pages. And my friend, and career coach, Chrissy Scivicque, has provided a great article on questions you should ask yourself before entering into a formal coaching relationship.
