Note From Julie: Constant Connectivity is the New Normal

Jul 27, 2018 | Technology

When I’m babysitting my 4-year-old niece, she likes to open the Notes app on my iPad and practice her typing and emoji insertion skills. After she gets tired of that, she wants to explore the kid’s shows and games on my iPad.

I used to tell her that I didn’t have kid’s games or shows on my iPad. Her response was, “Well, you can type kid’s games in there [meaning my search bar] and they will come up.”

She was right. And I now have a “kid’s shows and games” folder on my iPad with a few of her favorites.

It’s easy to get accustomed to using our digital devices for the same old things. But it’s also easy to get addicted to the convenience and speed a new app may add to our routine.

The Jimmy John’s and Panera Bread restaurant apps top that list for me! I can save my favorite sandwiches and meal orders along with my location and payment method, and have lunch or dinner delivered in minutes with just a few screen touches. It’s delightful!

Apps that can get us a quick meal or a niece-pleasing video are wonderful. But in this age of constant connectivity, it’s also important to take advantage of apps that help us handle work-related tasks more efficiently.

In this week’s feature article, I share some of my favorite categories of apps to consider for productivity and connectivity, along with some of the specific apps I use in each category. I’d also love to hear which apps or categories of apps you consider a must have.
