Jaclyn Baldovin lives in northern Virginia, a place that regularly experiences inclement weather, such as snowstorms, wind, and icy conditions, all of which can make it difficult for her to get to work.
“There was one snowstorm in particular in January 2016 where we got about 20 inches of snow,” Jaclyn says. “I’ve learned how important it is to put a good plan in place with your manager for what you should do if you are unable to get to work in the snow.”
She says a common policy she’s encountered is that if you can’t get to work or feel unsafe on the roads, do your work remotely if you can.
“For a few years, I lived about 10 minutes from the office, so I would drive in if possible. Then I moved 30 minutes away and I didn’t feel comfortable driving in the snow. So, I wouldn’t go into work if it were snowing at all. But I would work remotely, and I had a plan in place with my manager for doing my work from home.”
Jaclyn’s Best Tips for Dealing with Inclement Weather
Know what your manager or executive expects from you if the weather prevents you from getting to the office and create a plan to work remotely, if possible.
Keep a close watch on the weather forecast. This makes it easier to plan in advance.
Download a weather app and/or check weather.com frequently.
Be equipped with at least two good snow shovels.
Make sure your phone is fully charged in case of a power outage.
