Event planning has always been one of my favorite parts of being an administrative professional. There is so much opportunity for creativity, planning, and organizing. There are some types of meetings and events, such as board or staff meetings, that are very similar in how they are executed each time. Then there are others, such as employee appreciation events or sales team incentive trips, that have different themes, venues, activities, and planning components each time you plan one.
Event planning rarely gets boring. And it’s a fantastic resume and portfolio builder, too!
Throughout my career I’ve planned a wide variety of events and meetings. Every time I was assigned a new type of event, I opened my checklists or procedures from past events and used them as a starting point for planning. From there, I continued adding to or editing my previous templates, so it would be documented for the next time I was asked to repeat the process. This saved me countless hours in planning, and made a favorable impression on everyone I interacted with when coordinating events.
Event and meeting planning is one of the key areas where assistants need a good system in place. It is a big responsibility – whether you’re organizing a convention or a board meeting. Your personal brand and reputation are attached to the successful execution of the meetings you coordinate, so it’s important to consistently explore resources, best practices, and tools that can help you.
This week, we’re highlighting some of our favorite event-planning resources on Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. We would also love to hear some of your favorite event-planning tips and tricks! Share them with us online or drop us a note by email.
